Reasons for blue
- You caused the damage
Even if it was an accident, the parked car owner did nothing wrong. They should not have to pay for something you caused.
- Minor damage can still be expensive
A small scratch might look tiny but still cost a lot to repair, especially on newer cars.
- It shows character when no one is watching
The whole point of the dilemma is that there are no cameras and no witnesses. Leaving a note proves you are honest even when you could get away with it.
- You would want the same done for you
If you came back to your own car and saw a scratch, you would probably hope the person had left their number.
- Guilt can stick around
Driving away might feel good for five minutes, but later you might keep thinking about it. Leaving a note gives you peace of mind.
Reasons for red
- It is only minor damage
Someone might think, “It is just a scratch. They may not even notice.”
- Fear of consequences
They might worry about insurance, money, angry phone calls, or getting blamed for more damage than they caused.
- No one saw it
The temptation is strong because there is no obvious punishment. The person might think, “Why create problems for myself?”
- They may minimize it
They might tell themselves the other car was already old, already scratched, or that “these things happen.”
- Panic
Some people might drive away not because they are evil, but because they freeze, panic, and make a bad decision in the moment.
